Running keeps me sane (or insane as my wife would say) as well. Welcome to the blog. Good luck with Long Beach, it was my first marathon (first running race of any kind) way back in 1987. Just found my first time finisher's medal the other day;-)

Wow you are ready to qualify for Boston if you are running like that.

Which race are you going to run for you BQ?. I will be running the Miami ING, which I am not sure if it is a good idea, since the race is at the end of January and around that time Miami is still pretty hot. Ohh well, I guess that I will find out then. Anyway, I am not sure if I could make the time (3:10). I would have to keep a pace of 7:15 per mile, and I can't do that right now. I know that I still have time to prepare, but I think that is a little bit out of my reach. I will try though, and even if I don't make that time I know that it is going to be amazing running my first full. Do you ever run in Florida?.

From Gary on Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 13:50:27

Great running Megan. I start my runs around 4:35AM to get an early start on the heat because its already 78 degrees with choking humidity. But still fun to get that runners feeling and regain some sanity. Looks like another hurricane coming this way so its back to the treadmill late in the week. Keep on winning.

From Barry on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 23:02:30

I have to agree with Marion that is a lot of miles in the middle of the week. How can you run so many miles and go to school? When i went to school i could not do it!! I might run a race in October in Boise, so i am trying to get my miles up to 70 per week. I would like to run the half marathon, but i want a 1:25 to 1:30 time. I ran 60 miles last week and this week i have a race so i am only running 40 miles. But after this week i will be slowly going up to 70 per week.

From marion on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 23:36:28

I know the feeling- you've got to get the miles in when you can. I am forever making sure I can fit the miles in depending on when my husband is working, when I am working and when the kids leave for school,or swimteam, or some practice or something. It is a shuffle everyday and practice in flexibility.

I placed 1rst in my division: F20-29, 3rd female overall, and 18th overall M&F. I just ran the worst race of my life... it was one disaster after the other. Last year I ran the same course in 1:37:48... 4 minutes faster... I thought I would get faster with more training. I am new to using the energy/power gels, I started off slower than normal so at mile 3 I consumed a power gel. I did not get enough water after the gel at the next few aid stations... I felt extremely thirst, so at mile 9, I stopped and drank 2 cups of water. Finally I felt better, but it was kinda too late, plus I had 1.5 mile hill right after feeling better. I'm trying to let it go, but man that sucks to train hard and run so much slower than all my other 1/2 marathon times. In two weeks I have a full marathon, hopefully i get my mojo back. My race pae today is pretty close to my predicted full marathon pace. Thanks for reading.

Thanks Marion! Yoga is totally awesome with running! I went to Bikram this morning:) My first Full marathon is this Sunday...I'm getting a little anxious. I've been tappering the past 2 weeks, this is my first experience with tappering (I don't really tapper for halfs).

From marion on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 16:35:08

Fresh legs!!! You are going to do so great!!! Halfs don't need much of a taper, per what I have heard and seen by the runners on the blog. They have all done pretty big ones for marathons. I can't wait to hear how it goes for you!

I ran my first full marathon this morning at the Long Beach Marathon. I went out kinda hard because I was worried my legs would peter out in the end. Which my legs did, after mile 21, my goal was just to finish. My legs and feet hurt so bad, I can barely walk right now. But it was all worth it...I feel so accomplished!

I placed first in my division, females 20-24. 36th female overall and 264th with both males and females. My finish time was 3:33:23 (8:09 pace). I qualified for Boston Marathon! There were about 3000 runners in the marathon.

Took my dog for short walk this morning and taught a 60 minute yoga class. My IT bands are extremely tight/sore. If anyone reads this and has some tips on marathon recovery, I'd appreciate any insight as Sunday was my first marathon.

Comments
From jtshad on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 16:21:52

Ice, rest, light stretching (there is a good stretch for IT bands but it is hard to describe...do a web search), ibuprofen! Use a foam roller for working out the soreness in the IT bands.

From marion on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 16:34:53

I use my rolling pin on them. My kids think I am WACK!! They are right! I also like to put one foot in front of the other, feet paralel. Then forward bend. Do this with a chair in front of you. You may need it if they are very inflamed. 1/2 lord of the fishes also is very helpful. But, wrap your right arm around your left knee and hug the knee in as you twist. This takes the stretch in to the piriformis and ITB.

Just don't skip any yoga and be EVER SO KIND! I have been taking Aleve for my ITB and it has helped a TON!!!

ooo another one, the runners lunge. but while you gently fold over the leg, move your hips from side to side, inner spiraling one thigh at a time. That really gets in there.

From Megan on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 16:41:25

Thanks for the tips! I'm goin to take some IBproffen, I don't have a foam roller. i was using one at the gym this morning, but I should have spent more time on the roller.

From kelsey on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 20:44:23

My best advice: rest up, you deserve it!!

From Jim on Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 23:01:10

I usually do a couple beers, have a greasy cheeseburger and do the hot tub at home after the race, then go run the next day. I never stretch, it's just too depressing.

From montelepsy on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 15:13:57

It's not so bad. There are guys who can run during lunch which is crazy. It's just too hot. I run at night when it cools down 20-30 degrees. The bad thing about running at night is you can't see stuff and you end up spraining your ankle and not running at all.

I know a nutcase who uses a softball like a foam roller.

Have you tried using a medicine ball like a roller it's much less painful than a softball and much easier to find than rollers?

took it easy today... supposedly one is to reverse tapper post-marathon... which is what I'm doing. Plus my dang it-band is still kind tight, that is a hard place to stretch.

I think next week I'll move into higher mileage... if anyone reads this is 2 weeks of reverse tappering post-marathon sufficient, too much, too little?

Comments
From marion on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 12:12:41

I dunno about reverse tapering. You can look at what MichelleL and Josse are doing to ideas. ITB is very hard to stretch. The only thing I have heard is to be sure to do the stretches SEVERAL times a day. Be dilligent.

Great run! I have heard alot of marathoners say 1 day of very easy running for every mile ran. ????

Have a great day!! When does your term end?

The side of my hip, which I think is the IT-band started hurting again around mile 5... I wondering if a massage would help?

I've been super busy with grad. school... and haven't been logging my workouts. To be honest after running my first marathon... I've been kinda taking it easier, my motivation has dropped, I've still been running just about evryday tho, just a lil' slower.
